Artist Statement - Turnings by JusKim

When I first approach a newly cut "blank" and set it between centers on the lathe, I feel both excitement and fear.  Excitement in wondering what kind of marvelous form is lurking there, waiting to emerge from the blank canvas; fear that I will ruin it before I can unearth what it wants to become.

I feel that I am blessed to be able to create art with "green" properties by using one of Mother Nature's most renewable resources - the local timber of our beautiful Ozark Hills.  Because of the natural properties of burl wood, just like snowflakes, no two will ever be identical.  I can take no credit for the natural beauty of the wood; I simply expose what was hiding there all along.

I believe that my finished turnings, rather than my words, will reveal my passion for this art form.  I hope you enjoy touching them and holding them as much as I have enjoyed my part of their creation.

Kim Kenney - Artist Bio

Armed with no formal artistic training and nothing more than a love of things born from Nature, along with an amazing amount of good luck, Kim Kenney (a.k.a. JusKim) began her woodturning career late in 2008.  Taking instruction from Artist Jerry Crowe of Unique Turnings, she started down a path that would lead her to something she could never have dreamed of!  Having never seen a lathe in use and without any training in woodworking other than spending weekends working with her mentor, Jerry, Kim remained a "weekend" woodturner until January 2012.  At that time she resigned her Customer Service position of 15+ years with a local manufacturer, left the corporate world behind and began to devote herself full time to her passion for creating on the lathe. The main focus of her 3-D work is hollow form vessels turned from burl wood.  She utilizes the raw material available from the beautiful Ozark Hills where she resides.

Kim is a member of the American Woodturning Association, Stateline Woodturners and a Juried Member of the Best of MIssouri Hands.
